The score was 20-20 at halftime. After a close and intense 2nd half, a 45-42 final score granted the North girls basketball team their first win against local rival Edgewood since 2014.

The cougars took the win on the road on Tuesday, Jan 22nd.

Forcing turnovers and hitting free throws were vital to the cougars’ success, especially late in the game, as Edgewood continued narrowing the cougars’ lead to at times just one point.

Junior Guard Erin Lillis made 6/7 free throws in the final minute of the game, solidifying the win, and contributing to her leading 19 pts total. Senior guard Allison Hopkins had 5 rebounds and forced 5 turnovers, and juniors Ainsley Urbanski and Bentlei Grooms had 13 and 7 pts respectively.

Every player was necessary to win the game, as the cougars’ lead was never greater than 10 pts. Close games are always high stress, but also high energy. Hopkins, as the sole senior on the team, shared her perspective on close games

“Close games make me really nervous, but at the same time I love them because when your team can pull together and come out with a win it shows our discipline, strength, and character,” Hopkins said.

The victory was a team effort, a result of hard work and determination from the first minute, to the 2 pts made in the final 2 seconds. According to Hopkins, the cougars went in focused on executing what they had been practicing and working together.

“We were excited and happy with our success, but have quickly refocused and are getting ready for our senior night game,” she said.

The cougars take on their next opponent Terre Haute North at home on Thursday Jan 24th, and celebrate their senior night. Junior Varsity begins at 6 pm with senior activities and varsity to follow, so come out and support your lady cougars!
